Plan your flight from Birmingham to Johannesburg

How to reach the centre of Johannesburg from the airport?

After your Birmingham to Johannesburg flight, you will land at Oliver Reginald Tambo airport (JNB), the biggest in the whole of South Africa in terms of passenger flow. It is located about 12 miles away from Johannesburg city centre. Once outside Terminal A - which Air France flies to and from, namely with departures to Birmingham (BHX) - you can pursue your travel to the city centre using various means of transport.

The Airport Company South Africa has an official fleet of taxis to drive you wherever you want to go. Count between 30 and 40 minutes to get to the city centre, depending on traffic. The company offers a shuttle service with departures every 15 minutes, leaving from the bus station right near the terminal building. You may also take a train or bus from the airport to the heart of Johannesburg.

Practical information if you are considering driving: Terminal B has a car rental service. Short- and long-term car parks are available for stays ranging from 1 to 24 hours. To get around and reach the city centre, you will first need to rake the R24 motorway.

What administrative formalities need to be taken care of before taking a flight from Birmingham to Johannesburg?

Before buying your airline ticket from Birmingham to Johannesburg, you should first check your passport is valid. The latter needs to be valid for 30 days after your return date and needs to have two blank pages. If you are staying less than 90 days, there are not many administrative formalities to take care of. Authorisation to stay in the country will be granted once you have landed. Visas are not required when travelling as a tourist.

However, you will need a visa for stays exceeding three months. A visa is also recommended if you are travelling for work or business - such as for an internship abroad or if you are planning to do volunteer work.
