Hong Kong, the pearl of the Orient

A city, a region and an island, Hong Kong is a unique destination. Attached to China, the island of Hong Kong is a special administrative region in the country. The region has 262 islands, with the main island of Hong Kong holding the largest portion of its population, or about 7 million inhabitants. A city of leisure and business, Hong Kong stands out for its dynamics. It is one of the symbols of China's successful economic development which is widely turned to international markets. In fact, Hong Kong is often compared to other large cities in the world, such as New York and London. However, despite the frenzy, Hong Kong has the characteristics of a typical Chinese city. Behind the towering skyscrapers, the city still bears the marks of its colonial past as a “fragrant port” (literal translation of Hong Kong).

Visiting and relaxing in Hong Kong

For many foreign tourists, shopping is the main activity in Hong Kong. The city is full of malls and markets. Go to the Admiralty, Central and SoHo districts for luxury shopping. Causeway Bay is a consumer temple. From luxury shopping to good deals, you can find everything as long as you don't mind crowds. For more authentic shopping; go to the antique district, Cat Street, the Ladies' Market or the Jade Market. The goldfish market shows how much the Chinese love aquatic environments. Hong Kong is also a city where you can easily find entertainment. If you are travelling with your family, have fun in one of the many theme parks such as Ocean Park or Disneyland.

Other points of interest in Hong Kong:

The clock tower: symbol of Hong Kong's colonial past, was built in 1915 to mark the limit of the railroad station in Kowloon-Canton. The historical monument marks the beginning of industrialisation in Hong Kong.

Another curiosity is the avenue of stars. It pays tribute to actors who have been successful in “made in Hong Kong” cinema.

For a view over Hong Kong and its bay, go to Victoria Peak.

The Star Ferry boats are typical of the island and they show tourists a magnificent view of Victoria Bay.

Hong Kong, symbol of Asian culture

Hong Kong is one of the most emblematic destinations in Asia. The city groups together many aspects of Asian culture. However, a trip to Hong Kong is especially an opportunity to see modern China.

It is easy to find a place to eat in Hong Kong since there are about 11 000 restaurants and many party places.

Among the city's specialities, try:

Dim sum: steamed or fried dumplings of many varieties. They may be eaten all day long. They are made with shrimp, pork or beef. More typical, congee is a type of rice porridge that is eaten with pork, vegetables etc. They also serve dishes with wheat or rice noodles in typical restaurants.
