Conakry, travelling to the very heart of Guinea

Conarky is Guinea's capital, as well as its economic, social and cultural centre. It is a recent city created in 1890 by the French using typical African urbanisation techniques. Since 2015, the electrical networks have been developed, which greatly encouraged the town's overall development.

There are over 2.5 million inhabitants living there, from all different cultures. The languages used there are Susu, Pulaar, Mandinka and French. English is not particularly widespread, apart from in hotels and touristy places. Most of the time we recommend using a French-English dictionary to help you understand the locals.

To prepare your stay and flight to Conarky, try avoiding the raining season, during the monsoon period. The best time to travel is therefore between December and April. The temperatures do not vary that much from one month to another, ranging from 22 to 32°C all year round.

You will land at Conarky international airport, located right in the heart of the city. Air France offers regular flights from London, with a lay-over in Paris or Amsterdam. To book your airline ticket to Conarky, count a 10-hour flight with added lay-over time. There should not be any jet-lag however, as you will only need to turn your watches back 1h upon arriving. Conakry, Africa's port capital

During your stay in Conakry, you will discover a port city that seems to spill out into the ocean. The capital encompasses the island of Tombo - where the historical centre can be found - as well as the Kaloum peninsula to which it is linked by a dyke.

Despite the roaring urbanisation, you can discover the town's traditional earth houses - some of which are over a hundred years old. During your visits, feel free to step away from the beaten track to discover more traditional architecture - with all the embassies, schools and customs offices. The buildings' retro style is really quite captivating.

We also recommend that you discover the city's port. There are lots of fishing villages all along the coast, and that of Boulbinet located right at the southern point of the peninsula is one of the most interesting. You can watch traditional fishing practices, and can soak in the country's ancestral culture. Walk over to the lighthouse to admire the spectacular view of the surroundings.

Immersion in Guinea's culture

During your trip to Conakry, let yourself delve into local culture and live like the locals do. Call upon the motor-taxis, savour the local culture and stroll through the lively markets. Indeed, if you go to Conarky without going to the markets, you will not have experienced real local culture. Though there are many to see, we recommend visiting that of Niger or Madina. The market's many rows are bustling with people and you can find almost anything there. Vegetables, fruit, fish, meat, local specialities, soap or local objects made in small nearby factories. It is really worth a visit.

For a more tranquil atmosphere, do not hesitate to head to the national museum - located in the Sandervalia neighbourhood. Despite its small size and quick visit, its cultural interest is huge - and you can discover the country's history and culture through various objects and different models. Ideal for understanding local culture. When you come out, do not miss out on the museum's botanical garden, that offers a very pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.

We also recommend making the most of your stay in Conarky to discover the surrounding environment. The Los archipelago and mangroves are natural gems that cannot be missed.
