Shanghai, the city symbolising development in China
You have reserved your flight to Shanghai? Shanghai is China's largest city with over 23 million inhabitants! The city is located on the Huangpu River, near the mouth of the Yangzi Jiang, in the east of China.
Shanghai is divided into two parts: Puxi, the old city and Pudong, the new city where many skyscrapers have sprung up since the 1990s, giving Shanghai an ultra-modern look. Thousands of companies have moved to the city at dizzying speeds.
In recent years, whole neighbourhoods of traditional housing have been razed to make room for new housing made with modern materials.
Also, today, Shanghai is spectacular to see with a blend of colonial, traditional homes, skyscrapers and communist buildings!
Since the 80s, China has opened its economy to the world market, especially under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping. Shanghai changed so radically that the city was chosen for the World Expo in 2010. In short, Shanghai is truly the symbol of China's economic growth.
Shanghai: between traditional and ultra-futuristic neighbourhoods
When you purchase a plane ticket for Shanghai, prepare yourself to be amazed by the megalopolis' futuristic aspect! The towers compete with each other to be the tallest and they grow like mushrooms! The highest tower is still the Pearl of the Orient, used for radio broadcasting, with a height of 468 meters. Tourists can go up 263 meters to admire the incredible view of Shanghai.
Shanghai has an interestingly diversified architecture. You can visit the Longhua temple, the oldest and largest monastery in the city, the former residences of Sun Yat-Sen, the founder of the Republic of China or Soong Ching Ling, “the mother of modern China”, and Lu Xun, famous Chinese author. Why not take a walk along The Bund? You will have a magnificent view of Shanghai's skyline. You can also go shopping in the pedestrian street of Nanjing, a 5-km long artery.
Are you tired of the hubbub in Shanghai? Take a break in Yu Yuan Garden, a haven of peace: two hectares of greenery dotted with gazebos, bridges and ponds.
