Montreal, a metropolis that is half-way between Paris and New York

With 1.6 million inhabitants, Montreal is the largest city in the province of Quebec. Montreal is composed mainly of the Island of Montreal, but also other small islands such as the Île des Soeurs, or the artificial island of Notre-Dame, built on the Saint Laurent River in 1965, the city's backbone.

Multicultural, Montreal has many different neighbourhoods and faces. Montreal, is like a cousin to Paris and a little sister to New York, only about ten-hours away by bus.

Montreal is French-speaking and the French and English influences are obvious. Vieux Montréal (Old Montreal), with its buildings from the 17th century, the Jacques Cartier Square and magnificent basilica has a European flavour. The Mont Royal plateau is a very popular neighbourhood with trendy shops and bars.

You can also walk in the port, haunted by old industrial ghosts from the past.

Montreal also has many green areas: Jean Drapeau Park, Mont Royal Park at the foot of the hill bearing the same name, Lafontaine Park, Maisonneuve Park, etc.

Montreal: a festival-filled summer

If you purchase a plane ticket for Montreal, you will discover a cosmopolitan city that is wide open to culture. Many cultural events take place at the Place des Arts, in particular the famous Montreal Jazz Festival that is held every year in July. The city has many festivals in the summer, such as the famous Juste Pour Rire Festival in June, with “on” and “off” venues for new talent as well as the Francofolies.

The city also has several museums: Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Archaeology, etc.

There are numerous theatres along the avenue Saint Denis: Théâtre Saint Denis, Théâtre du Rideau Vert, Théâtre du Nouveau Monde, etc.

Culture also means gastronomy. There are all types of restaurants in Montreal, and you can buy fresh produce in the Jean Talon market where shops of all colours and fragrances will attract you. You must taste the famous poutine, chips with brown sauce and cheese, one of Quebec's specialities!
