Sustainable aviation fuel
What is sustainable aviation fuel?
Made from non-fossil components, such as waste oil and agricultural waste, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is a substitute for kerosene. The use of SAF reduces CO₂ and fine particle emissions throughout its life cycle, i.e. from manufacture to combustion. Air France only buys sustainable aviation fuel that does not compete with food chains and that isn't produced from palm oil. SAF is just as safe as kerosene and can be blended with it without altering aircraft, engines, or logistics and storage infrastructures.
Since 2022, French regulations has required fuel suppliers to incorporate a minimum of 1% of sustainable aviation fuel in all their kerosene sales in France. Air France has been involved in the development of these alternative fuels since 2011. By 2030, we aim to increase this percentage to at least 10 on our flights. Air France believes that sustainable aviation fuel is a decisive game-changer in the decarbonization of air travel. Currently, its production is still too limited. Air France is working alongside industrial partners and research institutions to ensure the rapid multiplication of its production channels worldwide.
