Pointe-à-Pitre on Grande-Terre Island

The Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, an overseas department of France, is an ideal destination for an exotic, tropical beach holiday. The city of Pointe-à-Pitre, originally named, Peter's Point, after the first settler in the area in the 17th century, is the largest on the island and serves as its economic centre. Guadeloupe is composed of several islands, two of which are large: Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, separated by a narrow channel, called the Salt River. Pointe-à-Pitre lies by the river; ideally situated for visiting the beautiful beaches and sites.

For discovering more about the islands of Guadeloupe and its colonial history, a visit to the Saint-John Perse museum offers insight into the life of a Créole home during the 19th century. The museum is dedicated to the poet, also known as Alexis Leger and you will find many artefacts on display explaining his life and work.
