Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso

Ouagadougou is the capital and largest city in Burkina Faso. It is home to 1.62 million inhabitants. Ouagadougou, known as Ouaga to the locals, is the country's economic, administrative and cultural capital. It is located in the heart of the country, in the Kadiogo province. The climate in the city and the rest of the country is tropical, so with successive rainy and dry seasons (October to May). For better acclimatisation, we recommend travelling there between the end of November and mid-February. Temperatures are lower thanks to the harmattan, a dry wind that blows from the desert, loaded with dust. During these periods, temperature peaks never dip below 28 to 33°C.

When organizing your trip to Ouagadougou, remember that locals speak More, Burkina Faso's official language. You can also use some French as about half the population speaks and understands it.

Ouagadougou, a poor city with a big heart

Ouagadougou is a typical African capital, constantly bustling. Ouagadougou is a destination that guarantees a complete change of scenery, and a warm welcome. The city is actually world-renowned for its kindness, making it so attractive to foreign investors.

Life there is simple and fairly poor. You will however be surprised by contrast between living conditions and the inhabitants' joy for life. The locals are filled with humour and kindness, and dignity is one of their fiercest traits. You should in fact know that Ouagadougou means “where we receive respect and honour”.

To get around once there, you can choose between renting a car or a motorbike. Given how dense the traffic can get, you may be better-off with a motorbike if you feel comfortable enough riding one.

During your stay in Ouagadougou, you can discover the city and its heritage. Start with the national museum, presenting various works of art from Burkina Faso's past civilisations.

You can also go and see the Mogho Naba palace. Though it cannot be visited, every Friday morning you can attend the “false start” ceremony. It symbolises the Mossi monarchy's fight for survival. This tradition refers to King Mossi who reigned during the 17th century - he one day appeared on his horse, in his armour ready to go to war, but ended up turning around and went back to his palace. Ouagadougou is a city whose activity revolves around trade. As you wander around, you will notice several markets - more or less structured - in which you can buy local crafts, food items and various rice-based specialities that are typical to Burkina Faso.

The overall atmosphere is extremely colourful and paced by traditional music. The city overflows with energy and creativity. You can attend various festivals highlighting the country's traditions and music.
