Discovering Nigeria
With over 170 million inhabitants, Nigeria has the largest population of any country on the African continent. Located in the Gulf of Guinea, it is home to many races, and no fewer than 521 languages are spoken in the country. However, English is the official language. Life here is not expensive, and you will find board and lodging at a very reasonable price during your stay.
The capital, Abuja, is located in a savannah region in the centre of the country. To travel around the country, use the buses which are both comfortable and safe. You can also take an inexpensive internal flight, but they are few and far between.
We would recommend that you book your flight to Nigeria during the dry season, from November to March, especially if you want to visit the south of the country. In this region, with its tropical climate, the rain is both heavy and frequent in summer.
Nigerian Traditions and Culture
Lagos is Nigeria's second largest city and the former capital. It is a lively city with a large population. The music, much loved by the Nigerians, continues late into the night. Don't leave without visiting the National Museum, with its beautiful statues and wooden masks, typical examples of Nigerian art. So many wonders to discover thanks to Air France's regular flights to Lagos.
In the north of the country, the sacred forest of Oshogbo is an entrancing location. The last area of primal forest in the country, it stretches to the outskirts of the city. The Yorubas, a major ethnic group in Nigeria, sculpted tree trunks into human forms and built sanctuaries far from civilisation. These sculptures hidden among the large trees create a unique and magical atmosphere.
Nigeria's natural landscapes
Sea, mountains, savannah and desert… Nigeria offers travellers a wide variety of landscapes. To the north, the Sahel is a dry zone on the edge of the Sahara desert. The centre of the country is occupied by the savannah and plateaus, and the east is a mountainous region, including the Mount Chappal Waddi.
Nigeria is crossed by the Niger, the third longest river in Africa. On its banks, you can see many species of birds. Don't miss the Niger delta, rich in vegetation, with its latticework of streams lined with mangroves and palm trees.
Nigeria includes two large nature reserves. In the Yankari National Park, to the east of the country, you can go either on foot with a guide or by car to admire the animals in semi-liberty. You will discover protected species, and sometimes you may have the chance of seeing lions or elephants. The Cross River National Park, next to the Cameroon border, is home to the last remaining drill, an impressive but endangered primate. You will also encounter a remarkable number of species of butterflies.
