Fort-de-France is a French city, the administrative centre for the overseas department of Martinique, with nearly 90 000 inhabitants. The city has both an important economic and trade position in the Lesser Antilles archipelago.

Between 1635 and 1807, Fort-de-France had different names: Cul-de-Sac-Royal, Fort-Royal, Fort-de-la-République, etc. At first, the marshy territory only had a few houses, including the governor's home. Much work was required to make the land and air healthy. The city then had periods of development which were destroyed several times by natural and man-made catastrophes: earthquakes, hurricanes, fires, etc. At the beginning of the 20th century, a volcanic eruption destroyed the city of Saint-Pierre, making Fort-de-France Martinique's first city.

Currently, the city extends along the volcanic chain of the Pitons du Carbet, to the coast which gives Fort-de-France a particularly rich topography with significant variations of altitude, cliffs, beaches etc. Vegetation also differs according to the altitude: mesophilic vegetation that grows in a somewhat damp climate at low altitudes, and hygrophilic vegetation (presence of vines and large trees that grow in damp environments) starting at 700 meters.

Due to a damp, tropical climate, temperatures are relatively high all year long, with an average temperature of 26.5°C, and important rainfall. Note that the rainy season in Martinique is also hurricane season between the months of July and October.
