Buenos Aires, the city that never sleeps
Argentina's largest city with 14.5 million inhabitants, Buenos Aires is one of the largest and most dynamic cities in Latin America. The name means “good winds” and goes back to the period of Spanish colonisation. Despite the country's turbulent history and a serious economic crisis in the early 2000s, Buenos Aires pulled itself out of the recession thanks to the strong will power of its inhabitants. They are called the “porteños”, in reference to the city's port activity, located on the mouth of the Rio de la Plata.
Although the city has an exotic side, it also has a European flavour marked by the architecture of some of its monuments. Buenos Aires never sleeps and visitors always find something to do at all hours of the day or night. There are about 3 000 restaurants and many tourist attractions. The Argentinean capital has attracted many tourists from around the world for many years. Air France offers daily flights to Buenos Aires with stopovers in Paris or Amsterdam.
Discovering the culture in Buenos Aires
The immense city has 48 districts. The main ones are:
San Nicolas or Microcentro
It is Buenos Aires' central district. Some of the tourist attractions are the Obelisk, the calle Florida, the Metropolitan Cathedral, Avenue 9 de Julio, the world's largest and the Teatro Colón. It is easy to find accommodations with the numerous hotels and restaurants. It is also the city's financial and economic centre.
Palermo
The largest district in Buenos Aires. A very residential, tree-planted district where there are many restaurants and shops. The district has various neighbourhoods such as trendy, festive Palermo Hollywood, Palermo Parques with 25 hectares of green area or Palermo Soho, the favourite neighbourhood for artists.
Recoleta
The city's historical district. Home to the wealthy. Among the main monuments, there is the National Museum of Fine Arts, the plaza del Pilar, The Ice Palace and the Recoleta Cultural Centre. For shopping, don't miss Alvea avenue, famous for its luxury shops.
Puerto Madero
This district has the capital's most skyscrapers. It is the most expensive area of the city as well as the most recent. There are many fine restaurants, luxury hotels as well as entertainment complexes such as cinemas and a casino.
Belgrano
A very residential district a bit removed from the city centre. It has many parks and is connected to the city by public transportation. It is home to many “porteños” from the middle class.
Retiro
Cosmopolitan and animated, this district attracts tourists from around the world for its famous Plaza San Martin. You can also admire the Kavanagh Building, the Falkland Island (Malvinas) War Memorial and the Monumental Tower. Retiro also has the Villa 31, one of the shantytowns in Buenos Aires.
La Boca
Typical, but relatively poor, the Boca district is particularly loved by tourists for its animation and colourful facades.
Monserrat
Historical district, Monserrat has many monuments including the famous Palacio Barolo which pays tribute to Dante's Divine Comedy, or the Plaza de Mayo and its pyramid. It is also the area where you can admire the presidential palace (Casa Rosada) and a large number of buildings that are linked to the city's history.
Culture, history, gastronomy or relaxation: there is something to please everyone in Buenos Aires. For cultural visits, there are many museums and cultural centres. Special events take place year round.
The city of tango, don't miss a stop in the city bars to see the traditional dance performed to the sound of street music.
